Osama Bin Laden....so, what?
February 17th 2008 02:23
Listening to a recent talk show on the radio, I was struck by the angst and anger voiced by an individual that called in to critique a guest speakers position. A comment was made by the guest speaker suggesting that the USA should not have allowed OBL to escape killing or capture in Afghanistan. The critique was proffered by a member of an intelligence gathering organization with probably no more than three initials in its name. Who politely, but without vagary, suggested that the guest didn’t know what he was talking about where it involved the Intelligence Community.
So, take this comment with a grain of salt or sand: I am aware of a young man, serving in Afghanistan as a sniper, whose team had worked itself into a position to take out Osama. When he called in to for permission to fire, he was denied permission and was ordered to stand down, but maintain surveillance and continue to gather information. This incident occurred in the last several months near the border of Pakistan.
The US intelligence community has all too often been described as being a french fry shy of a Happy Meal, and I find that objectionable. Few in the world have the aptitude, skill or training to track big game animals, let alone an animal as dangerous as an armed man or a jihadist group with a cause, that can and will terminate your life if you reveal yourself prematurely or accidently. The only difference between being killed by an animal’s claw and tooth vs the man’s AK-47, is that one of the two would eat you after dispatching your bony butt.
What’s the point of allowing OBL to live or to maintain the pretense he is alive: he doesn’t become a martyr as well as the figure head of the jihadists. That, and as he sets in a cave languishing away, he is in prison so to speak. He doesn’t have real relevance or freedom, he can’t call home, go shopping, use the internet, get modern medical assistance, spend time with his family, basically, all there is for him is the living hell he has created, bereft of virgins or camels. The scary thing is that he believes in his cause, that makes him dangerous, but dead he would be even more dangerous. Alive, OBL serves a useful purpose; someone more dangerous won’t capriciously usurp his current role as figurehead and leader to become even more of a threat.
So, what about this? Should we let Musharraf deal with him? Should we stick with the devil we know or take our chances with one we don’t know? Would you have given the stand down order?

Nothing else to talk about, I hear?
And to-day's my day off. But I ( and maybe we ) missed you. Glad you're still alive.

My Apologetics
Bin Laden and Musharraf are different characters so dealing with either of them has different purposes.
I figure that OSB is pretty much a spent irrelevant force now. So I will address what I see as the issue with Musharraf.
When supping with the devil it may be wise to use a long handled spoon. However it would be a mistake to assume people are just tools for a PR or Propaganda campaign. You may end up being little more than a union rep for a dictator.
There is no indication that Musharraf is anything other than a dictator who can speak nicely in television. Hardly a recommendation. Watch television in SE Asia and you will see so many who can speak nicely like wise old men and saints. If only they were.
The hardship that Musharraf is putting on Pakistan stem also from cronyism, nepotism, corruption, stacking the judiciary, rigging the election, arrest of opponents and an absolute incompetence at reducing the threat of Al Q. Yet he speaks so nicely in English.
The results are the survey that shows that Bin Laden is more popular that either Musharraf of George Bush in Pakistan. Anti-American sentiment is increasing over the years rather than decreasing.
If people think that Musharraf gives a rats about the USA then they have not studied him too hard.

Yo! Damo, bingo, I knew you’d get it, Musharraf is quite the high wire artist to be sure. His love for the USA is depthless to say the least. I have been watching him, the president who would be emperor.
Why D’Armenta, you sly woman you; in OSL’s case Gitmo would be an upgrade in living conditions for sure, and torture can’t be any worse than a life time supply of fleas living in your under garments.
Devil’s will always remain devilish to be sure Kleo, but nothing says I hafta suffer their presence in my life forever. But understanding how to handle them is the true art form. So, managing them makes sense to me. Thanks for the kind words.
Great to hear from all of you! Raven
