Violated by God or Government ~ They Need Help

May 6th 2008 01:29
YANGON, Myanmar - The death toll from a devastating cyclone in Myanmar could reach more than 10,000 in the low-lying area where the storm wreaked the most havoc, the country's foreign minister warned Monday.

Story Link

The government misled people. They could have warned us about the severity of the coming cyclone so we could be better prepared," said Thin Thin, a grocery store owner.

No big surprise, this has been a matter of policy.

The radio station broadcasting from the country's capital, Naypyitaw, said 3,939 people had been killed. Another 2,879 people were unaccounted for in a single town, Bogalay, in the country's low-lying Irrawaddy River delta area.

If they were so concerned, why didn’t they warn the public?

But Foreign Minister Nyan Win told Yangon-based diplomats that the death toll could rise to more than 10,000 in the Irrawaddy delta, according to Asian diplomats at the meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity because it was held behind closed doors.

That figure is probably wrong, because the Generals realize they have an opportunity for the score of a lifetime.

Myanmar's ruling junta, which has spurned the international community for decades, appealed for aid on Monday. But the U.S. State Department said Myanmar's government had not granted permission for a Disaster Assistance Response Team into the country.

This is going to be about change in Myanmar and I hope an end to the military junta; but until those military wankers greed is slaked or they’re deposed, the world will be flushing aid money down the crapper trying to help the public.

Sadly, this is going to get volatile, any wagers? Besides prayers for the safety and well being of the general population, there may not be much to be done for the citizens in a country where the leadership is content to let them die at hands other than their own.

This one pisses me off - their government knew it was a matter of time before they got caught in a disaster.

An Update: State media reported on Tuesday that 22,464 people had now been confirmed dead and another 41,054 people missing as a result of the cyclone. As rescue teams get to areas presently cut off, those figures are expected to rise.

That's a bad government... you can bet the junta didn't lose any houses or loved ones...

I can always hope Cibbuano, the few Burmese that I know, are good people and I grieve for them. Although educated and skilled, they chose to stand with their family and friends awaiting the demise of the junta puppeteers.

Raven,

this is what REALLY 'gets my goat', the West then offers assistance, and watches it handed over to the sons of bitches who oppress the people, and keep it to themsleves, we see that in Africa all the time.

The lack of action against this horrible dictatorship, like the inaction against that low life mongrel Mugabe, is a damning testament to our collective governments', less than honorable, nature when we do not act in these situations, yet attack Iraq, Afghanistan etc on spurious and unfounded justifications, all for the sake of oil.

pant pant..wheeze...getting a grip...anyhoo, it just looks like the junta there wants to take the opportunity to rid itself of some trouble makers, like the poor!

The army has not been seen apparently, probably because they all took their families to higher gorund before it struck.

UTTER BASTARDS!!

cheers

Yeah, sadly fog, I just heard a late news blurb that says 15,000 are dead and 30k are missing according to Thai sources.

There seems to be a massive effort to try to bring the people relief, but....but....will they actually get it.

Definitely watching this one unfold.
I think 15000 may be a conservative estimate.

Damo, I am concerned that it'll be more than that, it could set off some horrific waves of illnesses and diseases through out the region and further exacerbate the suffering of Burmese citizens.

I read that when people in the prison panicked, the guards open fired killing more than 30 people and injuring 70 others. It's not bad enough that people died in the disaster, they then just kill more. I expect that will keep killing people as the crisis gets worse. A sad situation made worse by the junta.

36 Prisoners shot dead by guards during Cyclone Nargis
Posted by burma digest under News

Burma Updates (AAPPB) Linked to blog story.

The Cyclone Nargis also hit Insein Prison in Rangoon. On Saturday morning at around 8 am local time, the roof of the Insein prison building was ripped off by the cyclone and a fire broke out in Hall No 1.

The prisoners inside the cells called for help for hours, but prison authorities failed to show up. Finally some young jail service men opened the doors to the cells.

As prisoners ran around in the prison compound, army soldiers fired at least 30 gun shots at them from the top of the roof. At least thirty-six prisoners were killed by the shots and 70 more injured. No political prisoners are among the dead.

All prisoners are in great need of health assistance, blankets and drinking water, and political prisoners have made demands for these needs but prison authorities denied their demands as well as aid delivery from family members who went to the prison today.

Is this similar to what you saw reported Johnny C?
