Snippet on blogging…
June 29th 2007 22:17
Today was spent browsing through the various blogs and sharing them with my wife. Wow, it has been an interesting journey. She nestled onto a handy couch and listened. I caught her snoring (softly) only once.
I am seeing far more creative use of pictures to draw attention to individual posts. Well done. The blog story points are much crisper and cleaner than I remember first reading. Topics resonate with powerful humor, passion and concern. Most are a joy to explore; those that aren’t make wonderful bad examples.
On a personal level, I find myself reluctant to let go of a post even though it's already been uploaded. This author finds himself changing photos and headlines that aren’t working. Adding tidbit’s and fine tuning the verbiage. I had a recent post up for hours without generating any interest, after changing the title and lead photo, it started skyward a few minutes later.
I am willing to share anything that isn’t overtly personal; but when I post a story dealing with specific issues of concern to me, I find myself injected into the story. Anybody that is reading and looking for indicators about me beyond the obvious will find plenty of them. Yet, although based on life experiences and therefore history, I am reluctant to expose myself to the world. I hate it when I do, because some of the flashes of my inner demons scare the hell out of me and leave me naked. But I have seen the same or similar demons reflected back at me from other posters on Orble.
To all of you, thank you for allowing me to be a part of this extended family. I am going back to visiting sites and commenting; while I plunder your medicine cabinets and other forbidden zones.

I gather the picture is of your beloved. If she's awake? Give her my regards.
You make some interesting observations about Blogging.
Regardless of how good the text is? Unless it is accompanied by graphics/imgages, it will draw very few 'skim' readers (but it will draw regular readers into literature, wit and humour, if that's your and their thing).
I really get into the personal blogs. The ones where the Blogger reveals who they really are. The Bloggers who bare their soul, so to speak. (Not everyone of them. Some people go a bit overboard into the good ship Woe). Baring your soul in a public domain is not for everyone. Other people have families to consider, etc. Privacy issues with work, etc.
I find the best part of Blogging is the comments section. That's where people loosen up a bit and reveal their true selves. (Or tighten up even more, yet reveal more?).
If I wanted to create a really popular Blog? I'd keep the Posts quite short, do heaps of them, always use graphics / images, and generally ask other Bloggers questions to allow them to express their opinions.
One of the problems with that? The Blog develops into a virutal version of Springer or Oprah. A virtual shitfight of personal opinions.
But keeping the post to a reasonable reading length always helps. The posts that are pages and pages long? Unless they're really well written and of interest to your regular reader base, most people won't read them or comment on them.

The personal disclosures are not for me, I didn't come for that purpose but too many of them [not yours] turn me right OFF.

You're correct on all counts, and I laud your keen observations.

People who disclose personal things (gossip) via private messaging, pretend they don't, or deny they do this, yet try to stand aloof on some ever-shifting, unstable, virtual figment of their own superior, moral high-ground imagination? They're the ones who turn me off or put me to sleep. zzz.

An echo of my sentiments.
David,
hahaha, don't hold anything back.

I hope that your better half appreciates your better efforts as much as I/we (the royal we) do.
Several blogs i do enjoy.
Mostly the ones that have a sense of humour (note the Australian spelling) and ones writen by people who can think beyond anger.
Some are deep and over my head and others are so shallow that they insult the brain. On the whole there are just too many good posts one day to comment and the next day too few.
Some people are just terrific people and others just a few have a very big ax to grind so I give them a little space and let them enjoy the echoes in their own heads. I tend to be less judgemental with younger writers as they may still be formulating their life with out the big experiences and kicks in the guts.
Yet I do enjoy people who know what they want to write about and do so in an enjoyable manner.

Very nicely put, I appreciate individuals willing to go 'at risk' with their writing. It takes courage. Ax's are easy to grind but don't produce anything of value.
Thank you for visiting.

Your thoughts support my observations on the dynamics (I think) this community has -- fascinating and *scary*...
Comment by tlcorbin-raginravensview
Fascinating and scary are the two descriptors that work for me... I'm glad you stopped by. Your First Date post was provocative.

I have to say, I like this blog and I quite like the man that writes it.
Looking forward to when I might see you in my corner of the world. I promise nothing except who I am, even when I am wrong.

I too abhor exposing myself, yet here, in the most exposed place, I feel safe. Strange?
Comment by tlcorbin-raginravensview
Not really, we can hide behind an obtuse persona and that gives us just enough edge to feel safe; works for me.
