Goodbye Heath Ledger

January 22nd 2008 22:25
Sadly, 28 years old Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment this afternoon by his housekeeper. Pills were supposedly found scattered in an area in close proximity with his body on his bed. His talent is going to be missed. He was in full cardiac arrest when help arrived. Naturally, they suspect he committed suicide; my question is, Why? Accidental OD, maybe. What are your thoughts?

Update: The autopsy conducted today, didn't produce any obvious results. And may take about a week to be conclusively resolved. What was painfully sad for me was the reaction of his family. His fathers remarks were touching. I feel that his family, Australia and the creative world have all lost a very bright star.

And then we have the innocent, his daughter. Who is going to be able to explain away the loss of a daddy to his little girl when she' older and needs him? She may wonder if it's her fault in some way, and carry the unearned burden of guilt as a result.

Tracy and katyzzz, the pills found on site are prescription medications, but the rumor mill is really buzzing.

Harvey at TMZ is purportedly reporting that he, Ledger, had a substance abuse problem and that the police are leaning more towards an accidental over dose. Everyone seems to be second guessing his mindset, trying to be psychics, who knows.

Damn! And I thought 28 was bad for me. What a waste! I liked him because he wasn't one of those "pretty boy" young actors.

Yeah, he was an interesting and fearless actor James, I hope the pundits don't try to turn him into anything other than that.

Raven,
Ive not long been up. I turned on my computer and the yahoo home page unfolded and spewed its news at me, and I felt Id been punched in the stomach. I trembled. I thought I was going to cry. I read it again, and again, and again. Im still having trouble accepting it. Im very disappionted neither of the radio stations Ive had on for the last half hour have thought to tell me - perhaps have on a tribute.

Since the days of 'Ten things I hate about you' Ive admired Ledger - I thought "You will go far" a strong person and rarely expressive actor who seemed to have his head firmly screwed on. With the success of 'A knights Tale' and up and coming batman, I thought he'd made it....

Im so very sorry. So very disappionted. I would not be surprised if it was an OD - Id been hearing rumours that he wasnt doing well but it was all eclipsed by Owen Wilson.

No matter how deep you are, no matter what drugs can do to your mind, body and soul, you always know when youve gone too far. To continue, at that point, is suicide.

It reminds me of Marilyn Monroe.

But it also draws ties with Britney - I still believe Britneys problems began with her knee injury in 2004. Suddenly the born gymnast could no longer run flip and jump, and is dependant upon painkillers. A life lived under someones elses control now totally taken from her hands. And prescription painkillers have a siren call.....

Oh, Heath. Where was I? To put my arms around you while you cried and tell you that the darkness is just an illusion, thrown into relief by the light you make? All those shadows you can see are not threatening to eat you, they only exist because you shine so bright.....

Or used to. Give Steve Irwin a hug for me....And Im sorry. Sorry you hurt so much you couldnt ask for help - sorry we've been deprived of seeing you live up to your wonderous potential. Whether you did it willfully or not.....You didnt stop it.

Im rocked by this. Totally unexpected twist from the universe. Im going to miss him, once I can accept it at all.

Kleo, and Damo I really liked his work, I can't believe that he planned out his life to end up naked on a floor and dead at 28. It'll be interesting how far the media try's to stretch this out, he was a great talent and I'd rather that they didn't totally shred his image in the public arena.

Hi raven,

I wasn't a fan of his work (He ruined Brokeback Mountain for me) Monster's Ball. was his only effort that I didn't mind.

Still sad for the family he left behind, my sympathies to them.

I have friends in Calagary who did drugs with him when he was shooting Brokeback...(Heroin, Coke and pot) they said he was pretty over indulgent then, so maybe the addictions just got stronger.

Hi Raven

Such terrible news when a life so young is taken. If it is drugs then it`s even more tragic. Hopefully his family will have not been left with that awful question of 'why?' that sometimes lingers after one is taken so tragically.

Amazing how one person whom we have never met can send such ripples of grief around the world.

Very, very sad

I still don't know what to think... it's a surprise, no doubts ... he was so young and talented and apparently, unhappy?...

John Doe, his drug usage aside, he was very talented. He may have been able to work his way through the drug use, but we'll never know now. I thought his Knights Tale was the most fun for me.

Azangelina, interesting that you shared a birthday with him, fortunately your life paths can run independently. It is certainly grounds for reflection however, none of us can take anything for granted.

Ash, as I understand things, he was estranged from his wife and family. I would like to think he had made provisions for both.

Lilla
, he was reportedly a very private individual, so there weren't any obvious indicators of problems or that he was unhappy. I tend to think it was an accidental over dose.

Thank you all for visiting and commenting. Remember his family in your meditations.

It goes to show that fame, fortune and success does not automatically mean happiness. Suicide and drugs seem to plague famous people. Depression in the entertainment industry is alarming. Something should be done about it. It's such a waste. Very sad.

It's ironic how there are ordinary people in the world out there sufferring illnesses and fighting for their lives, while the rich and famous are just throwing it away thinking life is worthless when they have all the opportunities opened to them.

Comment by tlcorbin

Glen, you are very right about that; he had what many of us can only dream about, and it proved to be wanting.

Maribeth, it's hard to fathom any sense out this whole thing, but, in hindsight, I honestly can't say that I am sorry fame and fortune passed me by. That prize has claimed way to many lives prematurely.

They're claiming now that it's looking like an accidental overdose. I was never a real Heath Ledger fan (dude seemed to take himself WAY too seriously)......but god it's just such a waste. 28 yrs old with everything to live for. I really feel for his family.

Comment by tlcorbin

January 23rd 2008 06:52
You know that to be true Kylie, I hope his family gets through this without to much undue grief. But, much of that is going to be up to the way the media conducts itself.

Comment by Michaelie

January 23rd 2008 07:43
I agree with Kylie - he really did seem to take him self too seriously, was pretty arrogant - but I still really liked him and I did think he was talented.

He was very fun in Knight's Tale and Ten Things I Hate About You, and I thought he was quite magnificent in Two Hands and Candy... though his talent in Candy is a bit ironic now that he has died of a drug overdose.

Whatever his talent though, he was a twenty-eight year old father, and this is a tragedy.

What makes this screwed up is the rumor that his role as "The Joker" could have lead to this event. While studying for the role he locked himself away from people to get into a "dark state" for his character and apparently suffered from insomnia while filming. I'm not saying the Joker killed Heath, he might have had some issues no one knew about, but the rumor is this could have been a factor.

Rumors or not I did enjoy his acting, especially in The Patriot, but I did not like his anti-Australian comments at one point. Again he was a good actor and a huge loss for Australia.

R.I.P Heath Ledger.

If thats the case he may win a post humous best actor...

Comment by tlcorbin

January 23rd 2008 16:01
Michaelie, it seems to me that to be any good at being an actor or actress you'd have to be a bit self absorbed to perform as a different character other than your own; but I have no first hand experience, I just understand the loss of talent and a child's parent.

Hello Wayne, although anything is possible, perhaps he just made a mistake and OD'd. That is the simplest thing for me to believe, due largely to the fact that he had a lot of positive things going on in his life. His remarks concerning Australia are unfortunate. But, still, a sad loss.

Ahmed, that'd be interesting, time will tell.

Thanks for visiting everyone. I'd like to see Heath laid to rest with little fan fare and without the press painting his untimely demise any darker than it already has been. His autopsy results should be forthcoming shortly and will hopefully shed more light on the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Hi Raven--

Looking at it from a practical aspect, I don't think he'd have committed suicide in the nude. I think he just overestimated his tolerance level; that happens a lot to people who use the same drugs over a period of time. They think they have a higher tolerance than they actually do..

HI again TLC,

The word on the papparazzi-vine this morning, I see, is that they found a rolled up $20 bill in his room?

Also, that one sleeping pill is enough to kill you if you have pnuemonia... and there is word that he did at the time?

I am interested to see what else comes out over the next few days ... meanwhile I believe it was accidental because he loved Matilda and found his life complete in her company... Yes, a very private man indeed... I think that was part of the appeal.

Sadly Lilla, there are those that will want prey on his passing and do what they can to stir up controversy. Looking down the psychic road, I prefer to think that although he may have had a problem, he wanted to be involved in his daughters life, and would have taken steps to get well for his daughter. As a former self medicating fool, I know that it is a difficult but not impossible task.

Be thankful you are not in Auzzie, Raven. His home - Im disgusted. I should have expected it though. The rumours, the photos...The dogs are roving and theyre tearing him apart in the desperate quest for dollars. You Bastards.

The thing boiling me up, is according to the rumours, he was breathing when the massuese rang Mary Kate.

He was definitely alive at 1pm, when the housekeeper went through.

And, Im hearing all these things that point to cries for help....The way he used to go down to the same restuarant and order the same thing, speaking to no one, in a hoodie and sunnies, giving a peace sign(yahoo). An interview 2 months ago where he says hes not afraid to die, especially now that Matilda lives for him.

I believe it was suicide, but accidental. Feeling alone but not lonely, having everything but control - hes complaining he cant sleep, hes complaining he cant stop thinking. He says he lays down exhausted but his mind wont stop.

Been there. Am there.

So, he says, "Man, I gotta get some sleep. I know how many of these I can handle - I'll just take a few more. Ive just gotta rest...."

And the rest is rueters.

This is why I will not have prescription drugs. I once took all my antidepressants at once, just trying to feel better. I had Kman to take me to hospital though. He wasnt so lucky....

But im still getting used to the idea. Its sad. Even more sad how misunderstood its becoming.

Sadly but predictably Kleo, it's turned into a media feeding frenzy. Thanks to the internet, the world is now literally at our fingertips, and there's no relief from the sharks in action right now.

The legal medications are my nemesis Kleo, they beckon to me constantly, but I've resisted their sirens call for years now, and will continue to fight them off for the rest of my life. There will likely be lapses in my disciplined grip on those enticements but, I'll win in the end. Sometimes it's not the winning or losing of a particular battle, it's being engaged in the fight that ultimately rewards us. Raven

Hi Raven,
yeah it was sad to see, I think it best it is considered an accidental overdose, no matter what thwe truth just for his child's sake at least.

Allegedly he was popping a number of medications, I can say form personal experience, you do not have to take a lot to overdose, just mix the right/wrong pills, and that will stop the heart...maybe that is what happened.

I did not meet him personally, but a number of people I know knew him well, he was much loved by his close friends and the paper reported today how he had left a message on a Perth journo's answer machine just after Christmas, thanking him and praising the media for letting him have a much needed normal home Christmas with his family and friends....that goes to show how much he was hurt by elements of the media...a very sensitive guy...

cheers

I definitely was shocked to hear that he had passed away. He was a good actor and one of those rare celebrities who kept to himself for the most part. I think it's a shame how a lot of folks in the media are jumping to conclusions as to how and why he died. Let the medical examiners do their job!!! RIP Heath Ledger...

Hi Fog, that sums up my take of the guy; sadly, I knew the drive by media would be taking pot shots at him rather than report something positive.

Hi Darth Spoon, (love the handle), I'm with you on this matter. R.I.P. Heath, as for the drive by media, R.I.H. and be quick about it.

Hi Raven,

A few days have passed now since the news and so much has been said 'out there'. I've heard new things about Heath here just reading the comments on this post.

Heath will go down in history as a person that no-one really knew I think. He seems like a very complex man.

Here's a link to an article I read in The Sydney Morning Herald.

I think you'll like it.
