Do you ever go fishing?

June 18th 2007 02:56
As a fishing addict, I troll, drift and fly fish in Alaska for salmon or halibut. When I do fly fish, I use a set of two fly’s (one above the other) and a sinking line for fishing for Coho salmon. The fly closest to the sinking line is brightly colored, which helps me make the presentation of the working fly. Couple that with polarized sun glasses and, I have nearly complete control of my fishing. And I can virtually place a fly in the fish’s mouth of my choice. All of this effort is expended for the honor and privilege of bringing that fish, as the featured guest, to my home for dinner.

We also have times of year that we are allowed to snag salmon. It is an absolutely riotous outing, especially when you hook a 30 lb salmon in the tail and hand the rod and reel to someone that only weighs about 120 lbs. Such as my wife, and watch them get drug all over the beach trying to land the fish, no small task I might add.

Snagging hooks are basically a three prong treble hook protruding through an oz or two of lead, that are cast out and retrieved in a series of yank and reel motions, through a school of salmon. When you hit a fish, you know it, and so does the fish. It really irritates them and the fight is on!

Now before you start launching an all out assault upon Alaska for this practice; keep in mind that once these fish enter fresh water, they’re committed to a sordid life of mindless spawning and then are doomed to die. Wow, that sounds familiar.

Drifting for halibut is another past time of merit. Hook a herring onto several hooks and suspend it in about 150 ft of water and get out the playing cards, pretzels and coffee. The fishing isn’t always fast, but then it only takes a single 100 lb fish to brighten up your day. These fish can get up to 450 to 500 lbs. The tastiest are in the 25 to 50 lb range.

Two weeks ago, friends from the lower 48, were fishing in the traditional deep water manner and couldn’t get a bite. So they headed into shore where they could anchor up in about 30 ft of water and make lunch. Which they did, and fortuitously, they also decided to toss a baited line into the water and see if anything was interested enough to bite. Just as they settled down inside the boats cabin, they had an earth shaking bite. They ran out on deck, grabbed the horse shoe shaped fishing pole and set the hook as all hell broke loose.

They had hooked a whopper! They fought it for about 30 minutes to get it close enough to the boat to harpoon it, which they finally did, but the fish pulled out that first harpoon. They tried to harpoon the monster several more times before one finally held. They could see the thirty pound test line fraying as they wrestled the huge fish to the surface time and again. Their last chance to harpoon the fish worked in the nick of time. The frayed line broke just as they finally got a harpoon that held and was tied off before the fish could escape. The fish weighed 197 lbs and was one of several in the 50 lb plus range they caught that day fishing the shallows. This is definitely a story to remember, and share with their families. BTW, the halibut is delicious.

For some of us, subsistence fishing is an important function every year and we freeze, smoke, dry and can fish for use the rest of the year.

My recipes for smoking and canning are better than most: I catch, purchase and process enough salmon that I produce around 1,000 lbs of smoked and canned salmon for my home use. Every year friends hound me for smoked and canned fish, which I sell to them by the pound for obscene amounts, and they cheerfully pay up. It's a hobby that got out of control.

Anyone want to swap recipes for smoking and canning fish?

Raven is asking.

What? You don't use lures created on MS Paint?

katyzzz is going to get so upset with you for venturing outside of your abode and doing something active with your body.

The elderly are supposed to stay inside, paint, and philosophise, and convert the world to their way of thinking via the net, and teach then how to stay in front of their computers all day long, aren't they?

Oh, I'm from Australia. Just in case you didn't know.

Loved your earlier response. I hope you're recovering from your various, multifarious illlnesses.

Have to go now. I''m laughing too much to type.

I have NEVER fly fished but would LOVE to try some day. I also have NEVER been to Alaska but it is my dream place to travel. i want to take a cruise there one day with a room with a balcony. It's my #1 place on my list of dream places. Gotta do it via cruise. Not even sure why i havent went yet. Everytime we book a cruise, we go somewhere like Belize, Jamaica, mexico and the Bahamas. Next cruise, i'm going to Alaska.
Sounds wonderful what you do!

David,

My afflictions and I have lost interest in one another.

James,

Come on up!!!

charliesgirl,

Bring the family, pack a lunch and let's meet out at False Outer point on Douglas Island for some salmon fishing.
